The History of KGNU-FMKGNU has participated in the last few years in several initiatives to use the new technologies to enhance the services it offers. Project CONnECT (Colorado On-line Network Educating Communities Today) is a collaboration of local public broadcasting stations, community networks, and local schools whose goals are to bring community network with focuses on education, health, and library services to rural Coloradan towns. KGNU-FM has also been participating in the Boulder Community Network, a cooperative of local Boulder media; city, town and county governments; Boulder County Schools; and local community groups. The BCN is designed to be a comprehensive web of information and communication services providing all Boulder County, Colorado citizens with access to local and national information, to promote civic participation, educational excellence, economic vitality, and community involvement. KGNU has broadcast NEW AMERICAN RADIO from its beginning. In 1994 it joined New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. and KOHM (Lubbock, TX) in commissioning composers Alvin Curran, Rinde Eckert and Helen Thorington to create new works for radio. The commissions were funded with a grant from the Meet the Composer/Reader's Digest Commissioning Program, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund. The works were distributed as part of NEW AMERICAN RADIO's 1995 season.
KGNU's Online HistoryKGNU's Online Program guide was one of the first for a public radio station in the country and KGNU was the first public broadcaster to receive donations online.Most recently, KGNU has been awarded a Department of Commerce NTIA/TIIAP award for it's participation in the Soundprint Media Center's Global Public Telecommunication Network Project. The GPTN is a collaboration of several national public broadcasting stations cooperating in order to create a sustainable public information network. Once completed, the GPTN will be the first truly public multimedia information network to provide low-cost access and a free flow of information on the internet. KGNU will participate in the GPTN by being a regional hub for the Rocky Mountain Region and serve as a focal point for other community stations interested in similar projects. |
